“Toxic Relationships”

07/29/2011
Bulletin/Handout notes

Original Message/Sermon: Kevin Cox

Toxic: Week Three

– Toxic: anything containing posionous material capable of causing serious sickness or even death.

Do not be mislead: “Bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 15:33

Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene.  2 Timothy 2:16-17

TOXIC COMPANY EXAMPLES:
-THE CHRONICALLY NEGATIVE
-THE CONTROLLERS
-THE TEMPTERS

MANAGING TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS:

1) Set healthy BOUNDARIES.

Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” Matthew 16:23

Two ways to help set healthy boundaries:
a- “I won’t let you talk to me or treat me that way.”
b- “I’m no going there with you.”

2) Cut OFF the toxic relationship.

(Potiphar’s wife) caught (Joseph) by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house. Genesis 39:12

Walk-away point:

God’s cure for toxic relationships: QUIT INJECTING THEM INTO YOUR LIFE!

I ❤ My Church-Series (Week Four)

Today’s point: I can’t do life alone.

1. I can BELONG.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,  praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.  Acts 2:42-47 NIV

2.) Unity is VALUED.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:19-23 NIV

3.) I am ENCOURAGED.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.  Hebrews 10:24-25

Toxic Influences

Bulletin/Handout notes

Original Message/Sermon: Pastor R. Mosel

From One50Five service on 7/17/11.

(listen to sermon at one50five.com)

(I want to apologize for beginning on week two of the Toxic series, I was unable to attend or get the handout the first night.)

Toxic: Week Two

– Toxic: anything containing posionous material capable of causing serious sickness or even death.

Proverbs 25:26: ‘Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way to the wicked.’

Three things to remember:

1) A little bit of POISON goes a long way.

1 Corinthians 5:6-7: “Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast — as you really are.”

2) Just because everyone else does it, doesn’t make it RIGHT.

Romans 12:2 (MSG paraphrase): “Do not become so well-adjusted to your culture that you FIT INTO IT WITHOUT EVEN THINKING. Instead, FIX YOUR ATTENTION ON GOD. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops a well-formed maturity in you.”

3) Just because I COULD, doesn’t mean I SHOULD.

1 Corinthians 6:12: “Everything is permissable for me, but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissable for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.”

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22: “Test everything. Hold on to good. Avoid every kind of evil.”

I ❤ My Church-Series (Week Three)

Today’s Point: Growing people change and changing people grow.

I love my church because…..

1. I am challenged to change the way I think to the way JESUS THINKS.

Proverbs 4:23 (NCV) Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life.

Romans 8:6 (NLT) If your sinful nature controls your mind, there is death. But if the Holy Spirit controls your mind, there is life and peace.

Romans 12:2 (NLT) Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

2. I am challenged change through putting God’s word INTO PRACTICE.

Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV) “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

**Listening and doing is called obeying.**

John 14:15 (NIV) “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”

Philippians 2:12-13 (NIV) Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

3. I am encouraged to place my HOPE IN JESUS.

Isaiah 40:31 (NIV) Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Philippians 4:19 (NIV) And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
