When You Feel Like You’re Sinking

Sermon/Message Handout Notes from 5/29/2011. Sunday morning services at Stockbridge Community Church.

Speaker: Pastor Ricky Mosel

As soon as the meal was finished, Jesus insisted that the disciples get in the boat and go on ahead across to Bethsaida while he dismissed the congregation. After sending them off, he climbed a mountain to pray. Late at night, the boat was far out at sea; Jesus was still by himself on land. He could see his men struggling with the oars, the wind having come up against them. At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the sea. He intended to go right by them. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and screamed, scared out of their wits. Jesus was quick to comfort them: “Courage! It’s me. Don’t be afraid.” As soon as he climbed into the boat, the wind died down. They were stunned, shaking their heads, wondering what was going on. They didn’t understand what he had done at the supper. None of this had yet penetrated their hearts.   Mark 6:45-52 MSG

WHAT DOES JESUS DO WHEN I’M SINKING?

1.) He SPEAKS up!

“Simon, stay on your toes. Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me, like chaff from wheat. Simon, I’ve prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start.”   Luke 22:31-32 MSG

Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.  Romans 8:34 NLT

2.) He STEPS up!

He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves…   Mark 6:48a NLT

Doesn’t he see everything I do and every step I take?  Job 31:4 NLT

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.  Hebrews 4:15 NLT

3.) He SHOWS up!

About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water.  Mark 6:48b NLT

No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.  John 14:18 NLT

But when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!”  Mark 6:49-50 NLT

WHAT SHOULD “I” DO IF I’M SINKING?

1.) Take a STEP of/in faith.

Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.  Matthew 14:28-29 NLT

2.) Stay FOCUSSED on Jesus.

But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.  Matthew 14:30 NLT

3.) Don’t DOUBT, and PRAISE God.

Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.  Matthew 14:31-33 NLT

ONE LAST THOUGHT…

When I TRUST instead of think, i WALK instead of sink!

God Bless,

Chris
