The Power Of Words

Message Outline for Tongue Pierced Series at Stockbridge Community Church on June 5, 2011. Speaker: Pastor Jeff Daws.

The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.  Proverbs 18:21 NLT

>The quality of my words determines the quality of my life.

How do we harness the power of our words?

We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.  James 3:3-5 NLT

1.) Practice starting my day with PRAISE.

I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever.  Psalm 145:2 NLT

2.) Offer words of ENCOURAGEMENT to others daily.

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NLT

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.  Hebrews 10:24-25 NLT

3.) Work to remove all CURSE words from my speech.

but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison.  Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!   James 3:8-10

4.)Exercise LISTENING twice as much as I speak.

Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others. Proverbs 12:15 NLT

5.) Release my WHOLE LIFE to God.

It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth”…But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you.  Matthew 15:11 & 18

Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.  Romans 6:13
